If you’ve already checked out my guide on Salzburg or my selection for Linz, you know that Austria is full of gems. But Hallstatt is different—it’s tiny, car-free, and requires a bit of strategy to get right.
My Favorite Hotels in Hallstatt
Here is a quick summary of my favorite hotels to stay in Hallstatt if you don’t have time to read the full guide. Just click on the hotel name to view details:
- Where to stay for the iconic view: Seehotel Grüner Baum – Right on the market square with the best lakeside terrace.
- Best luxury boutique hotel: Hallstatt Hideaway – Adults-only suites with private hot tubs and designer decor.
- Best hotel for history lovers: Heritage Hotel Hallstatt – Spread across three historic buildings in the car-free center.
- Best budget-friendly “Traditional” stay: Gasthof Simony – A charming 15th-century guesthouse.
- Best for families and parking: Pension Bergfried – Located in Hallstatt Lahn with easier road access.
- Best alternative (across the lake): Dormio Resort Obertraun – Perfect if Hallstatt is fully booked or too expensive.
In the Old Town (Historic Center)
The Altstadt is the postcard-perfect heart of Hallstatt. This is the car-free zone where the houses cling to the mountainside and the narrow streets lead to the famous market square.
Staying here is a magical experience, especially in the evening once the last ferry departs and the day-trippers leave. You’ll have the misty lake and the silent, glowing salt-mine mountain all to yourself.
I recommend this neighborhood for your stay:
- If you want the authentic “fairytale” experience.
- If you are traveling by train (the ferry drops you right in the center).
- If you want to wake up to the sound of the lake lapping against your balcony.
The neighborhood is the perfect spot to discover:
- The Market Square: Surrounded by colorful 16th-century buildings.
- The Bone House (Beinhaus): A unique historic ossuary with painted skulls.
- The World Heritage View: The famous “Classic View” photo spot is just a 5-minute walk away.
My selection of the best hotels in Hallstatt Old Town:
Seehotel Grüner Baum – from 240€ This is the most famous hotel in town for a reason. Located directly on the market square, its lakefront rooms have served royalty and movie stars. The terrace restaurant is arguably the best spot in the village for a sunset dinner. My top tip for a luxury lakeside splurge.
Heritage Hotel Hallstatt – from 210€ This hotel is unique because it’s spread across three beautifully renovated historic houses. The main building, “Haus Kainz,” is right next to the ferry dock. It perfectly blends old-world Austrian architecture with modern, high-end interiors. An excellent choice for those who want a 4-star experience in a historic setting.
Gasthof Simony – from 125€ If you’re on a tighter budget but still want to stay in a building from the 1400s, this is your spot. It’s a traditional B&B with wooden floors and incredible views. It feels like stepping back in time—in the best way possible. The best value for a truly historic stay in the center.
In Hallstatt Lahn (South End)
Hallstatt Lahn is just a 10-minute flat walk from the market square. While the Old Town is the “museum” side, Lahn is the “functional” side. This is where the bus station, the supermarket, and the Salt Mine funicular are located.
I recommend this area for your stay:
- If you are traveling with heavy luggage or children.
- If you want easier access to the Salt Mine and the Skywalk.
- If you want to avoid the steepest stairs of the Old Town.
Must-see places in the neighborhood:
- The Salt Mine (Salzwelten): The oldest salt mine in the world.
- Hallstatt Skywalk: A viewing platform 350 meters above the roofs.
Where to Stay in Hallstatt Lahn?
Pension Bergfried – Starting at 165€ This is one of the few places in Hallstatt that offers its own parking (a huge plus!). It’s cozy, clean, and located right at the foot of the mountain. It’s perfect for families who need a bit more space and convenience.
Fenix Hall Boutique Hotel – Starting at 230€ A modern, chic boutique hotel located in a quiet part of Lahn. The rooms are incredibly stylish and contemporary, which is a nice break if you’ve had “too much” rustic wood in other parts of Austria.
Across the Lake: Obertraun
If Hallstatt is full (which happens often!), Obertraun is the best alternative. It’s only a 5-minute train ride or a 10-minute ferry/bus ride away. It’s much flatter, more spacious, and generally cheaper.
Dormio Resort Obertraun – Starting at 160€ (for a whole chalet) This is a large resort with beautiful wooden chalets, perfect for families or groups. It has a pool, a gym, and a restaurant, making it a very comfortable base for exploring the whole Dachstein region.
