If you’ve been following my guides for Linz, Salzburg, Hallstatt, and Vienna, you know Austria is a land of variety. But Innsbruck is where the city truly meets the mountains. Here, you can shop in a medieval imperial center and be at 2,300 meters above sea level in just 30 minutes.

Where to Stay in Innsbruck: My Selection of the Best Accommodations

Here is a quick summary of my favorite hotels to stay in Innsbruck. Just click on the hotel name to check prices:

  • Where to stay for the classic postcard experience: Hotel Innsbruck – Right on the riverbank at the entrance to the Old Town.
  • Best luxury boutique hotel: Altstadthotel Weißes Kreuz – A stunning, high-design hotel where Mozart once stayed.
  • Best hotel for modern mountain views: Adlers Hotel Innsbruck – Every room has panoramic glass windows facing the Alps.
  • Best for “Cool” & “Individuality”: NALA Individuellhotel – A quirky, design-led boutique hotel in the Wilten district.
  • Best budget hotel in Innsbruck: Motel One Innsbruck – Stylish, modern, and perfectly located near the station.
  • Best for families: MEININGER Hotel Innsbruck Zentrum – Fun, flexible rooms right in the center.

In the Altstadt (The Old Town)

The Altstadt is the medieval heart of Innsbruck. It’s a pedestrian-only zone filled with Gothic and Baroque buildings, dominated by the famous Golden Roof. Staying here means waking up surrounded by 500 years of history, with the peaks of the Nordkette mountains peeking over the rooftops.

I recommend this neighborhood for your stay:

  • If you want to be in the center of the imperial history.
  • If you want to walk to the Imperial Palace and the Cathedral.
  • If you love Christmas Markets (the main one is right here!).

My selection of the best hotels in the Old Town:

Altstadthotel Weißes Kreuz – from 210€ This is one of the oldest and most beautiful hotels in the city. It was recently renovated into a high-end “Design Hotel” while keeping its historic soul. They even have a “Mozart Suite” where the composer stayed as a boy. My top pick for a luxurious and historic escape.

Hotel Maximilian – Stadthaus Penz – from 165€ A family-run boutique hotel that feels incredibly chic and cozy. It’s located in a quiet pedestrian alley, meaning you get all the central benefits without the noise. Perfect for travelers who want quiet sophistication.

In Mariahilf & St. Nikolaus

Just across the Inn River from the Old Town, Mariahilf is home to the iconic row of colorful houses you see on every Innsbruck postcard. It offers a more relaxed, local vibe while being only a 5-minute walk from the Golden Roof.

I recommend this neighborhood for your stay:

  • If you want the “Postcard View” from your window.
  • If you prefer boutique apartments and local cafes over large hotel chains.
  • If you want to be close to the Hungerburg Funicular (the start of your mountain journey).

Best Accommodations in Mariahilf:

Hotel Mondschein – from 145€ Located directly in the famous colorful row of houses, this hotel perfectly blends traditional Austrian style with modern, colorful accents. The breakfast room looks right over the river toward the Old Town. The best choice for photography lovers.

Faktorei – from 160€ A minimalist, eco-conscious boutique hotel that feels like a peaceful sanctuary. It’s located in a historic building but features clean lines and natural materials. Ideal for travelers who appreciate sustainable, modern design.

In the Wilten District (The Trendy & Local Side)

Located south of the city center, Wilten is the coolest neighborhood in Innsbruck right now. It is a vibrant mix of student life, traditional Tyrolean culture, and creative energy.

Centered around the beautiful Wilten Basilica and the Leopoldstraße, this district feels much more “real” and less touristy than the Old Town. It’s home to the best independent brunch spots and the historic Stubaitalbahn station.

I recommend this neighborhood for your stay:

  • If you want a hip, urban vibe with a younger crowd.
  • If you love brunching at local cafes and browsing vinyl or vintage shops.
  • If you want to be within walking distance of the Main Station but in a more charming area.

The neighborhood is the perfect spot to discover:

  • Bergisel Ski Jump: A modern architectural masterpiece by Zaha Hadid with a panoramic café.
  • The Wilten Basilica: One of the most beautiful rococo churches in Austria.
  • The Grassmayr Bell Foundry: A 400-year-old family business and fascinating museum.

My selection of the best hotels in Wilten:

NALA Individuellhotel – from 135€ The highlight of this hotel is its incredible attention to detail. Every room is a “unique piece”—from the “Gold” room to the “Garden” rooms. It features a stunning courtyard garden and a 4th-floor terrace with mountain views. It’s my absolute favorite for travelers who want a hotel that feels like a piece of art.

AC Hotel by Marriott Innsbruck – from 155€ Located at the gateway between Wilten and the center, this hotel offers 4-star international comfort with a classic Tyrolean view. It’s right next to the Triumphal Arch and the casino. Ideal for business travelers or those who want reliable luxury near the station.

In Hötting & Hungerburg (The Sun Deck of Innsbruck)

If you are coming to Innsbruck for the mountain air, Hötting is where you want to be. Rising up the slope of the Nordkette mountains, this district is known as the “Sun Deck” of the city.

The further up you go toward Hungerburg, the more spectacular the views become. While it’s a bit of a climb, you are rewarded with the most peaceful atmosphere in the city and direct access to hiking trails.

I recommend this neighborhood for your stay:

  • If you want to wake up with the Alps literally in your backyard.
  • If you prefer a quiet, residential atmosphere away from the city bustle.
  • If you are a fan of modern architecture (the Hungerburg station is another Zaha Hadid gem).

Best Accommodations in Hötting:

Rufi’s Hotel Innsbruck – from 110€ Located in the lower part of Hötting (Höttinger Au), this modern 3-star hotel is perfect for active travelers. It’s fresh, stylish, and offers an excellent Italian-inspired restaurant on-site. It’s also very convenient if you’re traveling by car. The best choice for a modern, active base on a budget.

Montagu Hostel – from 45€ (Dorms) / 110€ (Private) Technically right at the bridge between the center and Hötting, this is the trendiest hostel in Austria. It has a very cool rooftop terrace and a popular basement bar. It feels more like a boutique hotel for the “young at heart.” The top pick for solo travelers and backpackers.

My Top 3 Tips for Visiting Innsbruck in 2026

1. The “Welcome Card” is Free! In 2026, most hotels and even many B&Bs will give you the Innsbruck Welcome Card for free if you stay 2 nights or more. It includes free public transport in the city and even some free guided hikes and mountain lifts. Don’t buy a transit pass until you check if your hotel provides this!

2. Ride the Nordkette at Sunset Instead of going up in the middle of the day with the crowds, head to the Seegrube station (1,905m) for a “Sundowner.” In the summer months, the cable car runs late, and watching the city lights flicker on below the jagged peaks is the most romantic experience in town.

3. Lunch at the Markthalle For an authentic and cheap lunch, go to the Markthalle (Market Hall) right by the river. It’s where local farmers sell their cheese and speck, but there are also tiny stalls serving incredible Tyrolean “Kasspatzln” (cheese noodles) and fresh soups.
