A tip: Klagenfurt is the sun-drenched capital of Carinthia. Because of its proximity to Lake Wörthersee, lakeside hotels sell out fast in the summer, while the Old Town stays busy year-round with Mediterranean-style festivals!
If you’ve followed my guides for Linz, Salzburg, Graz, or Vienna, you’ll find Klagenfurt has a distinct Southern flair. It’s a city of Renaissance courtyards, dragon legends, and one of Europe’s warmest Alpine lakes.

In the Altstadt (The Old Town)
The Altstadt is the soul of Klagenfurt. It was largely rebuilt by Italian architects in the 16th century, giving it a Mediterranean atmosphere unique in Austria. Everything revolves around the Neuer Platz and the Alter Platz, where you’ll find the city’s best cafes, hidden arcaded courtyards, and the legendary dragon fountain.
I recommend this neighborhood for your stay:
- If it’s your first time and you want to be close to the landmarks and museums.
- If you love dining out and enjoying “Aperitivo” culture in historic squares.
- If you are traveling by train (the main station is a short walk or bus ride away).
The neighborhood is the perfect spot to discover:
- The Lindwurm Fountain: The symbol of the city (a dragon carved from a single block of slate).
- The Landhaus: A stunning Renaissance building with the “Hall of Arms” (665 coats of arms!).
- Benediktinermarkt: The city’s daily market—the best place to try Carinthian specialties.
My selection of the best hotels in the Old Town:
Garner Hotel Moser Verdino by IHG – from 79€
The highlight of this 4-star hotel is its recent renovation (2025). It is the tallest building in the city center, meaning the upper floors offer incredible views. It blends modern luxury with a perfect location just steps from the Lindwurm.
My top pick for travelers who want the best service in the best location.
Hotel Sandwirth – from 84€
Housed in a neo-classical building, this traditional hotel is a Klagenfurt institution. It offers a mix of classic elegance and very spacious apartment-style rooms that are perfect for families or longer stays.
An excellent choice for those who love Austrian tradition and plenty of space.
Cityhotel am Domplatz – from 56€
If you want to stay in the center without spending a fortune, this self-check-in hotel is a great “insider tip.” It’s modern, clean, and located right by the Cathedral.
The best value for independent travelers on a budget.
Near Lake Wörthersee (Waidmannsdorf & St. Martin)
If you are visiting in the summer, you might want to stay on the western edge of the city. This area is much greener and quieter, centered around the Europapark and the Strandbad (the massive public beach). It’s about a 10-minute bus or bike ride from the center via the scenic Lend Canal.
I recommend this neighborhood for your stay:
- If you want to swim, sail, or hike every day.
- If you are visiting Minimundus or the Planetarium.
- If you prefer a “resort” feel with spa facilities.
Best Accommodations near the Lake:
Seepark Wörthersee Resort – from 140€ This is a true lifestyle resort. It features a massive spa area, an indoor pool, and a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the lagoon. It’s located right between the University and the lake. The best choice for a relaxing, high-end vacation.
Hotel Plattenwirt – from 130€ Located just 200 meters from the banks of the lake, this hotel is tucked away in the quiet greenery next to Europapark. It’s family-run and very peaceful, offering a great breakfast buffet. Ideal for families and those who want to be as close to the water as possible.
My Top 3 Tips for Visiting Klagenfurt in 2026
1. Meet the “Lindwurm” Properly Don’t just take a photo of the dragon fountain. Go to the Landesmuseum (Regional Museum) to see the actual “dragon skull” that inspired the statue—it was found in the 16th century and later identified as the skull of a woolly rhinoceros!
2. Follow the Lend Canal Instead of taking the bus to the lake, rent a bike and follow the Lend Canal. This 4km waterway connects the city center directly to Lake Wörthersee. It’s a flat, beautiful path lined with trees and historic villas—perfect for a morning jog or a sunset cycle.
3. Try the “Kärntner Kasnudeln” You cannot leave Klagenfurt without eating Carinthian cheese dumplings. Each one is “kändelt” (crimped) by hand. Legend says a woman isn’t ready to marry until she can crimp a noodle properly! The best ones are found at the Benediktinermarkt.
